Why We Built Coydog Fitness: Thoughtful Movement, Practical Education & a Different Kind of Fitness Community

Hi, we're Coydog Fitness.

We're a small business. We're growing slowly, mostly through word of mouth, trust, and people sharing us with someone else and saying, "Hey, you might like this."

And honestly? We like it that way.

Coydog wasn't built around the idea that fitness needs to be bigger, louder, harder, or more complicated to be worthwhile. We wanted to create something that felt useful, welcoming, and realistic for actual people living actual lives.

That idea shapes everything we do - from our online fitness classes to our instructor training.

We believe movement should fit into your life

There is no shortage of fitness advice telling people how they should exercise, how often they should work out, what equipment they need, or what they should be trying to change about themselves.

We wanted to take a different approach.

Our Online Studio is designed around thoughtful programming that people can actually fit into their lives. Some days you might have time for a longer full-body class. Other days, 20 or 30 minutes is what works. Sometimes you want strength training. Sometimes you want barre-inspired balance work. Sometimes you just want to get on a mat and move.

We don't think every workout needs to look the same.

We also don't think a workout needs to leave you exhausted or sore to have been worthwhile.

Our goal is to give people options and well-structured movement - not another set of rules they have to follow perfectly.

We don't think fitness needs to be about fixing yourself

One of the things we've intentionally left out of Coydog is a lot of the body-focused language that has traditionally surrounded fitness.

You won't find us telling you that you need to "earn" food, "burn off" what you ate, or fix your body.

We'd rather talk about what your body can do, how a movement works, how to modify an exercise, how to build strength, and how to make a class work for you today.

That's not because we think movement has to be serious.

Quite the opposite.

We think fitness can be useful and fun.

There can be good programming, thoughtful instruction, and a dog wandering through the middle of class.

All of those things can coexist.

We built our instructor training from the same philosophy

Coydog isn't only an online workout studio. We also offer an Online Barre & Strength Instructor Certification for people who want to learn how to teach.

And we wanted the education to feel as accessible as the workouts.

Our course is fully online and self-paced. It's designed for people who are new to teaching as well as current instructors who want to expand their skills or earn continuing education credits.

We cover strength training, barre fundamentals, core training, biomechanics, class planning, movement flow, modifications, instructional techniques, and practical considerations for teaching.

But we're particularly interested in the why behind teaching.

Knowing the name of an exercise is one thing.

Understanding why you're using it, what you're trying to accomplish, how you might modify it, and how it fits into a balanced class is another.

That's the kind of knowledge we want instructors to leave with.

Becoming an instructor doesn't have to mean having everything figured out

One thing we've learned through teaching is that certification is only one part of becoming an instructor.

You still have to figure out what kind of teacher you want to be.

You have to get comfortable speaking in front of people. You have to practice cueing. You have to learn how to read a room. You have to figure out how to modify movements when someone needs a different option.

And sometimes you simply need somewhere to start.

We encourage new instructors to take classes from different teachers, connect with other instructors, look for community classes and local opportunities, and start building relationships.

That can happen in person.

It can also happen online.

Follow instructors whose work you admire. Send someone a genuine message. Share another instructor's class. Start a conversation. If you're ready, you can even organize a free class for friends or your online community as a way to practice teaching.

You don't have to wait until you feel completely confident to begin.

In fact, teaching is often how you build confidence.

We believe instructors are part of a community, not a competition

This is something we care about a lot.

The fitness industry can sometimes feel competitive: competing for clients, class spots, followers, attention, or opportunities.

But our experience has also shown us how much can happen when instructors support one another.

Someone needs a substitute.

Someone is looking for a new teacher.

Someone knows about an opportunity that would be perfect for someone else.

Someone simply needs encouragement after teaching their first class.

Those connections matter.

We've seen how one small space can bring together instructors, members, artists, small businesses, friends, ideas, events, and collaborations—and how those connections can continue online and beyond the walls of one building.

That's community.

And it doesn't require everyone to do the same thing.

Small businesses grow because people pass things along

Coydog has grown slowly.

We're not trying to pretend otherwise.

We don't rely on being everywhere or sending five emails a week. We'd rather spend our time making better classes, improving our education, and creating things that people actually find useful.

A lot of our growth has happened because someone took a class and told a friend.

An instructor recommended our course to another instructor.

Someone shared a post.

A member came back the following week.

Someone found us online and decided to stick around.

Those things can look very small from the outside.

To a small business, they're not small at all.

They're how ideas travel.

So, what are we actually trying to build?

Something pretty simple.

We want to make thoughtful workouts that fit into real life.

We want to provide practical education for people who want to teach group fitness, barre, strength, and core-focused movement.

We want our online studio to feel welcoming rather than intimidating.

We want our instructor training to give people useful knowledge - not unrealistic promises about overnight careers.

And we want to be part of a fitness community where people cheer each other on.

We're not trying to be everything to everyone.

We're trying to make our little corner of fitness a place where people can learn, move, laugh, and feel like themselves.

Sometimes that means a carefully planned strength sequence.

Sometimes it means a 30-minute mat class.

Sometimes it means a dog interrupting the workout.

We'll take all three.

Thank you for being here

If you've taken a Coydog class, enrolled in our instructor training, shared something with a friend, left a comment, recommended us to another instructor, or simply followed along with Chicken and Schnapps, thank you.

We're genuinely grateful.

Small things really do make small businesses possible.

A share.

A recommendation.

A friend saying, "You should check this out."

Someone coming back next week.

None of it feels small to us.

That's how Coydog has grown - and that's how we'd like to keep growing.

Slowly. Thoughtfully. Together.

And with dogs, obviously.
